Shortened Show on M 9/6/10

A long-time DJ On WNHU, Miss Rusty J, passed away yesterday. Next Monday, Labor Day, September 6, WNHU will spend most of the day doing a tribute to Rusty and her "music for growed folk."

As a result, the Black Diamond Show will submit a short tribute to Rusty that will air on 9/6 some time during our usual noon-2pm block. Rusty was from West Virginia and loved some of the old songs and tunes I play, particularly the Gospel numbers. I never met her, but we had several very cheerful phone conversations about Western Swing, fiddle tunes, and old hymns and spirituals.

I offer my best wishes to Miss Rusty's friends and family.

The next full-length edition of the Black Diamond Show will be on Monday, 9/13/10. Our first anniversary show.

Black Diamond Show Playlist 8/30/10, WNHU 88.7 FM West Haven, CT, www.wnhu.net

I hope you all enjoy the show. If I do say so myself, there's some great music on today's show--and some absolute goofiness, I admit. But some great songs & tunes, too.

Selected Labor Day Weekend festivals

To some, Labor Day weekend means "last chance for vacation." For others, it means "another soccer tournament." But it also means "lots of great bluegrass (and other) festivals." Here are links to information about the 4 bluegrass festivals I'll mention on the August 30 edition of the Black Diamond Show. All of these festivals are a day's drive or less from the greater New Haven area. Check out a festival! Support the music live!

  • County Bluegrass Festival, Fort Fairfield, ME. Rhonda Vincent, IIIrd Tyme Out, Blue Horizon, and other acts.

  • Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival, Woodstown, NJ. Cherryholmes, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Riders in the Sky, Seldom Scene, and a lot of other national acts.

  • North Branch Bluegrass Festival, Bridgewater, VT. This looks like a fun little "regional" festival--spaghetti dinners, jamming, song-writer's contest, and lots of bands from MA, VT, NH, and upstate NY.

  • Rhythm & Roots Festival, Charlestown, RI. This used to be a cajun AND bluegrass festival. Now cajun, creole, bluegrass, old-time, zydeco--if it's "folk" and it's danceable, you'll hear it there and get to dance to it, too.
