Playlist for Black Diamond Show: 3/1/10 wnhu.net

OK, I expect Monday 3/1 to be a busy day. I may not even get to hear the show I sent in. Gasp. I just revealed the secret. I'm not really in the basement of Maxcy Hall Monday afternoons--I'm usually off at work getting ready for a 1 or 1:30 pm meeting. But thanks to modern technology, I'm able to send my show in ahead of time.

This week, it's the Black Diamond Show's turn to ask listeners in CT and on the Internet to call the station (203-479-8807) and make a donation to support WNHU, broadcasting from the University of New Haven. I'm a sucker for great stations like WNHU, WVUD (Univ. of Delaware), WERS (Emerson College)--stations affiliated with a college or university that actually let students on the air and let students be involved in programming decisions AND that have volunteers from the community come in and share their music with the community. I plan to support WNHU, and I hope you do, too.

OK--about this week's playlist. I was pleased to see that I was able to squeeze in as much music as I did. Highlights--Tracks from some newer CDs--e.g., Sam Bush's 2009 "Circles Around Me" and three tracks from the soundtrack to the current movie "Crazy Heart." Don't panic--only one of those songs is "out of genre"--I play a Louvin Brothers and a Delmore Brothers song from the CD along with Jeff Bridges and Colin Farrell (yup--the two actors) singing "Fallin' and Flyin'." And there's plenty of good music from the past, here, too.

Hope you enjoy the show! And don't forget to call 1-203-479-8807 to support WNHU.

Black Diamond Show:Drawing During March 1, 2010 Show

The March 1 edition of the Black Diamond Show (Mon 3/1/10, noon-2pm on WNHU, 88.7 FM in West Haven, CT, and on wnhu.net), will feature a drawing for listeners who donate at least $25 to WNHU's phone-a-thon during the show. The prize? Two tickets in the front row to the March 20 concert by the Tony Rice Unit for Guitar Town.

Be sure to tune in on March 1 and hear Mandorichard squeeze in 29 songs between WNHU pledge breaks. Like WVUD at the University of Delaware, WNHU presents a nice mixture of college radio and community radio. Worth supporting, even if you listen on line from the wilds of the Upper Peninsula of the North Woods.

Black Diamond Show: Playlist for Feb 22, 2010 (wnhu.net)

Today's show has the usual mix of bluegrass (old & new), old-time fiddle tunes, and a smattering of western swing.

Highlights, for me at least, include some of the music I've digitized lately, including Jim Eanes, Jethro Burns & Red Rector, Del McCoury singing with David Grisman et al., and the Louvin Brothers. And there's a song from Big Medicine's 2009 CD--one of my favorite CDs of the year. Joe Newberry of Big Medicine and Chris Brashear (also playing a track on today's show [with Peter McLaughlin]) were part of the Columbia, MO, music scene when I was out there in the late 70s and early 80s. . . .

A little western swing sneaks in with Merle Travis and Al Dexter. . . . And, after JD Crowe's "The Old Home Place," how could I resist playing Ron Thomason singing about having to hold an "Auction at the home place"?

So far today, I've heard from Internet listeners in MD, MI, and CT. Thanks for your support.

Black Diamond Show, Feb 15, 2010, on WNHU (88.7 FM, West Haven, CT, and www.wnhu.net)

Today's show opened up with the Infamous Stringdusters, then Jim Nunnally (and my mis-speaking the name of the 2nd tune in the BG medley he played--corrected below), then moved back in time--as usual. I just can't get enough of the Louvin Brothers, the Delmore Brothers, the Monroe Brothers, Jim and Jesse, the Lilly Brothers, the Stanley Brothers--notice a trend? I also played Merchant's Lunch by the Red Clay Ramblers since a friend of mine told me such a cute story about her daughter sitting on the stage while the old RCR played that song. And learning the words right away. "Broadway Brenda" indeed.

The LPs I was particularly glad to play parts of this week were an old Jim Eanes reissue from the 50s (out as an LP on Rounder), my favorite Stanley Brothers LP, an old RCA re-issue (on LP) of the original Bluebird recordings by Charlie and Bill Monroe, and a 1983 Rebel Records LP by Jethro Burns and Red Rector, "Old Friends"--just a lot of fun for a mandolin player to hear the two of them mandoing away at each other. And probably fun for others as well! Oh, and how could I forget -- "Great Atomic Power" by the Louvin Brothers! A cold war gospel number from the same brains that wrote "You got to pray to the lord when you see those flying saucers." Ah, but the Louvins wrote a ton of great songs too--"Cash on the Barrelhead," "I Don't Believe You've Met my Baby," and many other classics.

Anything by Roland and Clarence White and the rest of the Kentucky Colonels is always fun--but the version of Bill Cheatum I played from 1964 included Roland (mando) and Billy Ray Lathum (banjo) sticking in some extra key changes.

Just before Jethro Burns and Red Rector closed down the show, I played a track by a Philadelphia area banjoist--Jamie Watson. If anyone knows if he's still playing anywhere, drop me a note.

After and during the show I heard from listeners in CT, TN, and MD. Thanks for your continued support!

Black Diamond Show: Feb. 8, 2010

Oh my, the LPs I digitized this week really sunk in. I was so disappointed that my favorite Jim & Jesse track from the 1963 Newport Folk Festival (an old Vanguard LP) had a big "stick/skip" in it, that I put together a mash-up of that version and a version from their LP "Bluegrass Special." But plenty of other tracks from that LP made it on the air. The Jim Eanes LP I digitized also stuck in my head. . . . I also grabbed a track I digitized last year, Tut Taylor's "Turnaround," from his 1976 Takoma LP "Dobrolic Plectral Society." I also FINALLY got around to digitizing my favorite Stanley Brothers LP: 1973's County 739--"The Stanley Brothers of Virginia, Volume 2"--actually a reissue of an LP they recorded for Ray Davis' Wango label in 1964.

Subconsciously, I think the cold of the winter was making me feel old: Mac Wiseman's "I wonder how the old folks are at home" and Banjo Dan's "Back when the old folks were young" made it on the air. As did a great fiddle tune that describes what I'm watching when Tater Patch plays for a square dance or contra dance: Boiled Buzzards' "Grey-Haired Dancing Girls." Yeah, I check out the dancers who are closer to my age now. . . . And speaking of dancing, how could I resist closing down the show with a live recording from a Contra Dance! It was a fun show to put together.

Heard from listeners in Connecticut, Tennessee, Michigan, Pennsylvania, & Delaware. And I'm not related to any of 'em. Thanks for your support!

Black Diamond Show: Feb. 1, 2010

This show was a lot of fun to put together. Since it was the day before Groundhog Day, we played a couple of versions of the traditional song "Groundhog," added John McCutcheon's "Groundhog Day" for good measure, and played several tracks from "The Story that the Crow Told Me," Volume 2--a compilation of children's songs from all over Appalachia that I purchased as an MP3 download from Amazon.com. It's a lot of fun. Other highlights: Nickel Creek's "The Smoothie Song"--the first Nickel Creek Song I ever heard, and more stuff from some of the LPs I've digitized lately. I really like that 1981 Rose Maddox LP, "This is Rose Maddox."

Old Playlists: Part 4, December 2009

After a few weeks off while the schedule at WNHU was re-shuffled, the Black Diamond Show hit the airwaves in its new, 2-hour format on December 15, 2009. Here's what we played on 12/15, 12/21, and 12/28. 12/21 was our "Holiday Show," 12/28 spent a lot of time on Hank Williams. (My thanks to John Lupton of WVUD, 91.3, Newark, DE, for the idea of doing a Hank Williams tribute as close to New Year's Day as possible. John's Hank Williams tribute airs on New Year's Day, usually in the morning, every year on WVUD and at wvud.org.)

And the 12/21 show marked our debut in our current time slot: Mondays, noon-2:00 pm, on WNHU, 88.7 FM, West Haven, CT, and online at http://www.wnhu.net.
